CSV files are a common format when working with spreadsheets. The process to open a CSV file is really easy and usually takes only a couple of minutes, as this tutorial shows.

However, what can you do if the standard process fails? You can use Open Refine, a powerful tool that can help you clean and organise messy data.

How to use Open Refine to convert a CSV file

Download Open Refine following the instructions in this link.

Once you have installed it, open it and create a new project importing your data as the picture shows. Click next.

In the menu on the bottom of the screen, select “Commas (CSV),” and Open Refine will automatically convert your data into an organised table.

On the top right corner of the screen, choose a name and create a new project.

Depending on the size of your file, this process can take some time.

When it finishes, your spreadsheet has columns and looks tidy.

To download the data, click on “Export”, on the right hand side of the page, and select the format your need.
